This is in response to my own short piece: Why there is no anti-tax narrative in Pakistan? Actually, the Tax Payers Alliance Pakistan (TPAP) asked me to send something for their first ever issue of the Voce of Taxpayers. I thought what could be better other than this piece, why there is no anti-tax narrative in Pakistan. However, the editorial board of the magazine apologized for not using it citing the reason the TPAP is not against the taxes/taxation. Is an anti-tax narrative really against the taxes/taxation, I asked myself? Here is the answer. The first country teeming with an
The idea struck me as a surprise: Poets create aesthetic value. What value do the economists create? In simple words, what’s the purpose that the economists serve? I shared the idea with a number of friends including a few proper economists. They did not like it. They rather took it as something questioning the rationale of their profession. Sort of an existential affront. To me, it is a serious question. The intuitive proposition needs to be elaborated. And that happens so often: we elaborate things afterwards. Poets, artists, etc, do create value, that is, aesthetic value. They create values such
A clearly demarcated line can be drawn. On this side of which are found people who follow the rules and/or agreed upon rules. And on the other side of which are scattered people who follow no rules whatsoever but their own whims and notions.
Let me dispel this impression: “PTI supporters hoped Khan would challenge the entrenched power structures that have kept Pakistan underdeveloped…” [From an article that was published in The Express Tribune] Most of the supporters of the IK/PTI were/(are) haters of politics and politicians generally, and especially Sharif Family and Benazir Bhutto/Zardari Family. That’s why not many of these supporters got disappointed by the politics of Imran Khan while in the government and while out of the government. That was and that is largely a revengeful campaign. …a revengeful campaign eventually embraced by the Establishment and wholeheartedly supported also. Whereas it
In Pakistan, almost everybody, especially economists, politicians, etc, wants to tax the people, but they never tell, WHY. Because there is no anti-tax narrative. Because there are no anti-tax writers but hardly a few. Because there are no anti-tax economists but hardly a few. Because there is no anti-tax opposition. Because there is no anti-tax political party (but one: Civil Pakistan Party). Because there is no anti-tax lobby. Because there are no anti-tax MPAs/MNAs. Because there is no anti-tax newspaper. Because there is no anti-tax TV channel. Because there are no anti-tax voices but hardly a few. Let’s
A few years ago, friends from a political party, that formed the government then, asked me to tell what things our party should do. I told them the following: – that party contested the elections, they had an election manifesto, they already know what to do. – There are so many op-ed writers, analysts, etc, and they are already telling the government what to do. – If you want me to tell what to do. Tell your party to contact me officially and pay me a negotiable fee, and that fee would be paid by the party from its own
There was a joke about Gen Zia and Noor Jahan in which understandably Gen Zia was meant to be punished. But it appeared he was rather being rewarded and Noor Jahan was being meted out a punishment. The same is the case of Filers and Non-Filers. The government wants to punish the Non-Filers, but in reality it’s the opposite: the punishment is being meted out to the Filers. The latest case of such punishment, from the standpoint of the government, meant to be meted out to the Non-Filers is in reality a punishment being meted out to the Filers. And
A friend was an economist proper, trained in a foreign university. When I tried to express myself on an economic issue under discussion, he told me ‘You’re not an economist.’ After keeping quiet on a number of occasions, I insisted ‘let’s see what I have got to say.’ Yes, I am not an economist, trained even in a local institution. I read Marxism, almost whole of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, and was involved in the politics of the Left for years. To many, that would be a disqualification! I was taught economics by an illiterate, who could find a
He died last year. Till death, he was a Marxist. He left his home and family to devote himself to serve the cause. His last years were marked by disappointment over failure of the Movement of the Left in Pakistan. He died in depression. He was a polymath. A poet, literary critic, film critic, singer, Tabla-player, playwright, debater, teacher/trainer/mentor. A true, sincere and honest friend. Such were the persons and personalities that shaped the Movement of the Left in Pakistan. But unfortunate is the fact they did not/could not create an intellectual capital, including Pashi. He too spent the last
Under the circumstances, IK desperately wanted any crutches. JIP desperately wanted its mayor to be elected. That desperation is always bad in politics and bad politics as well. JIP provided IK with the crutches (ڈوبتے کو تنکے کا سہارا) at a time when the IK’s party, PTI has abandoned him and the Party itself stands nowhere. This desperate and bad politics of JIP made it loose its political verve and space. JIP is never good at playing good politics and a win-win game. Because at heart, at its core, it considers itself as a self-righteous entity. And whoever considers itself
I try to explain why there is no unrest (or it is in a latent state). There is no political group or party to lead the disgruntled people There is too much political and hence social uncertainty and insecurity disallowing the people to act and come out on their own The current political crisis has already complicated the things too much and people fear the worst There may be political loyalties not allowing this or that section of the people to raise voice against this or that political party And most important of all, there is the Civil Economy (informal
I learned a lot from the students I taught. Now when I reflect back on those years (1988-2006, a continuous teaching period, after that, it’s sporadic), I feel more indebted to the students for engaging with me in a sustained and productive dialogue than to my own argumentative mind. Without them, there was no “Other.” [While teaching courses such as Economics of Education (MAEd), Environmental Education (MAEd), Discipline of Education (MAEd), Philosophy and History of Education (BEd), An Introduction to Economic Thought (BSHon), An Introduction to Political Thought (BSHon), and Economics (FA, FSc) and Philosophy (FA, FSc),

Note: The following exchange took place in a WhatsApp group. The name of the objector is being withheld. Objection by Someone: Never understand this elite bashing. Are these old Marxists in new garb? Are we bashing success? Do we want communism? Reply by KA: Kindly pen down your (anti-) thesis and then anyone may counter it. I will do. Objection by Someone: Pen down what. I don’t fight ghosts. No one defines elite. They just talk of this socialist concept. Any one with money is elite Reply by KA: No, having money is not an essential feature of the Ashrafiya.
That’s something unprecedented. Probably never ever any head of the IMF came forward to publicly propose what the government of Pakistan needed to do. But such is the plight of a perennial borrower. Yes, a borrower, and not a beggar, as the taunt always goes. Obvious that beggars are not required to return the alms they are given, though they may not be welcome next time. Loans must be returned, and with interest and sometimes compound interest. Otherwise, bankruptcy or the forfeiture is the fate. Or the default and the international isolation and economic and political consequences concomitant with it.
Time and time again, the issue of hereditary politics finds limelight in the electronic and social media, and in the newspapers. For this or that reason, an intellectual or a political analyst, or a politician himself causes a stir. Now when Maryam Nawaz Sharif, daughter of M Nawaz Sharif was made senior vice president and chief organizer of the PMLN, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a veteran politician of the same party resigned from the post of senior vice president and criticized the hereditary politics. He told the press he had already apprised MNS about his resignation in case she was given
The umpteenth time, a nationwide electricity blackout happened on 23 January. It was told, after keeping the system switched off during the night when they tried to switch it on, it did not. However, whatever was the fault, electricity supply started restoring after 15 hours. The same is the case with democracy in Pakistan. The democracy grid remained switched off for about four years, until the moment darkness engulfed the power grid itself. Then the staff in charge invited the technicians to switch it on and reconnect it to the constitutional grid. It did not. Democracy is still in an
Note: A version of this article was published in The Friday Times. Miftah Ismail’s Economics Far Cry From His Party’s Record This is merely a cursory review/critique of politics and economics Miftah Ismail has lately been doing. Miftah Ismail is expressing his differences with the PMLN top leadership openly and in a challenging manner, and as he was fired from the ministership of finance about four months ago unceremoniously, he is rightly in the news. (His defiance must be appreciated unconditionally.) On 15 January in two sessions of the ThinkFest in Lahore, his talk clearly represents his views. In the
Note: A version of this article was published in the Friday Times. Project Imran Has Necessitated Shock Therapy For Pakistan’s Politics Top leadership of the PMLN failed to convince Asif Ali Zardari to boycott the 2018 general elections together. Zardari was of the view they should not leave the political field open and uncontested. He cited PPPP’s boycott of elections in 1985 that they still regret. The matter was brought to the leadership of the PDM, but tables couldn’t be turned, and consensus regarding not boycotting the elections prevailed. After that PMLN had a huddle to discuss whether to boycott
Note: An edited version of the following article was published in the Friday Times on 20 January, 2023. Can A People-Centered Charter Of Economy Be Achieved? The continuing debate on a charter of economy was initiated by two of the largest political parties, PPPP (2011) and PMLN (2015). But the civil society of Pakistan has taken the lead. A financial daily, Business Recorder, and an autonomous research organization funded by the government, PIDE, are contributing substantially and meaningfully to the debate. The BR Research essentially focuses on the regulatory environment, and PIDE lays stress on the policy and sectoral sides
The state economy has failed miserably. It is collapsing under its own weight. And the debris is falling directly on the already-much-dented civil economy. In case the state makes it happen, as it is trying to put all the burden of its own failures on the civil economy, that would be catastrophic. And that would unleash a domino effect like situation and may cause anarchy and lawlessness in the society.
The jurisdiction of the high courts and supreme court in the political and government matters (i.e. how to run the state/gov in accordance with the constitution) be done away with. That will allow the politics to survive or die or reform on its own and minimize the direct or indirect interference of the courts and the establishment in the politics. The only jurisdiction that should remain intact is the one that allows the citizens to file constitutional petitions against the state/government to secure their fundamental rights ensured in the constitution.
The barter is the essence of economics. Ultimately it’s a good (or a service) the exchange of which takes place. The economics happens between two or more barters. That is, economics rages prior to and after a barter. Let Economics be that simple. All else is a lengthy note appended to it by the apologists of the state. Let that note be as brief as possible.
Almost all the economists and the state economists especially have a painting hanging at the back of their minds that displays a dream of living happily ever after against which they do their economics.

Note: Here conversation means any serious exchange of ideas between two or more persons. Nothing in any manner has any reference to any person whosoever. As I am interested in ethics also, by observing what usually happens in conversations at various fora from a chat between a few friends or acquaintances to a large organized meeting to various WhatsApp groups, I have tried to form and compile a number of rules that may help a productive and mutually beneficial conversation to pleasantly take place. The following rules may serve in lieu of an ethics of a conversation. If someone considers
One friend sent this excerpt from Oswald Spengler: “This machine-technics will end with the Faustian civilization and one day will lie in fragments, forgotten — our railways and steamships as dead as the Roman roads and the Chinese wall, our giant cities and skyscrapers in ruins like old Memphis and Babylon. The history of this technics is fast drawing to its inevitable close. It will be eaten up from within, like the grand forms of any and every Culture. When, and in what fashion, we know not.” Here is what I wrote in response: I don’t know whether such doomsaying
The solutions economists put forward, such as to the (economic) problems/crises faced only by the state/government; I mean most of the economists, or almost all of the State Economists do that, and all of their solutions culminate in extracting more and more value or the wealth created by the entrepreneurs/citizens, i.e. that value and/or wealth that belong to them. No such solution asks for the size of the government to be cut down, to be limited. They always ask for more and more government, i.e. more and more taxes, etc, to be imposed on the people. Are there no Civil
In view of the massive taxes killing the economic life of ordinary citizens, Pakistani economists need to come out of their comfortable economic models and embrace the Economic Activism, some of the ingredients of which may be as follows: Main ingredients of Economic Activism: Radical solutions Ready-to-practice solutions Campaigning for those solutions Activism for those solutions Lobbying for those solutions Meaningful sloganeering
Most Pakistanis are psychological creatures. Only a minority elevates themselves to a philosophical level and a lot of them now and then relapse again into their psychological niche. So we have very few philosophical beings in our midst.
Danishwar Ashrafiya (دانشور اشرافیہ) is that class of intellectuals who has monopolized the publishing space, i.e. mainstream print and electronic media and publishing houses. And sometimes it appears that this Danishwar Ashrafiya is the ‘main culprit.’
It’s the same ill that afflicts politics and economics in Pakistan. Choosing winners and losers by employing unnatural methods. In politics, it’s the establishment that does that. In economics, it’s the governments that do that. In both cases, the natural process of choosing winners and losers is thwarted.
The political engineering has utterly failed and thrown the politics into a bottomless pit. In the same way, economic engineering too has miserably failed and put the economic state of the people into a despairing helplessness. What’s political engineering? It’s the management of choosing political losers and winners disregarding the will of the people. That is, it tampers with the natural flow of the political process and everything related with it, in order to arbitrarily decide who’s going to be the winner and who the loser in an election or otherwise. Now and then this or that political party or
